Delete your
account.

If you can sign in

Delete it yourself under Settings, Account: in our app, or in the chat on our website. If our app sent you here, use the form below instead.

If you cannot sign in

Enter the email address your account uses. We email a link that deletes the account only to an address the account has confirmed, by a code or link we emailed to it or through Google or Apple, and only three a day to one address. Asking again, within that limit, replaces any earlier link. The link works once, for an hour, and asks you to type DELETE first.

A subscription from the App Store or Google Play

Deleting your account does not cancel a subscription you bought through the App Store or Google Play. Cancel it there: on an iPhone, in Settings under your name, Subscriptions; on Android, in Google Play under Payments and subscriptions.

  • Notices about your app store purchases that our server received, and your account ID on any that also names another account
  • When you last refreshed your plan in our apps
  • Records of a subscription moving to or from your account, including whether you first bought it, which we keep only for your own plan

  • Daily API usage totals
  • API credit ledger
  • API credit purchases (the card payment record stays with Stripe)

What it keeps, and for how long

  • Changes to whether your account is a staff test account. Kept as our staff’s record of the change, with your account id and label removed.
  • Your account ID, and the ID our app used for your device with our subscription management provider, kept only until that provider confirms it has deleted your records, normally within two days. Deleted once that provider has confirmed, over about a day, that it has deleted your records: normally within two days of your deletion.
  • A one-way code made from your account ID, kept 90 days so a purchase notice about the deleted account cannot bring it back. Kept 90 days from the deletion, then deleted.
  • Sign-up screening record. Deleted, unless your account is less than a day old: then the network address it signed up from is kept for up to 8 days, with no account id or email domain, to stop repeated sign-ups from one place.
  • Error reports your requests triggered. Kept to fix bugs, with your account id removed, so nothing links them to you.
  • Coverage requests you sent. Kept as an area request only, with your account id and contact details removed.
  • Addresses that unsubscribed or bounced. Kept indefinitely, so we never email that address again.
  • Affiliate applications. Deleted, unless approved: an approved application is kept with the partner record for 7 years after your account is deleted, for tax and accounting.
  • Commissions paid to a partner for your subscription. Kept as the partner’s payment record, with your account id removed.
  • Which partner referred you. Kept as the partner’s record of the referral, with your account id removed.
  • Your affiliate partner record, if you were a partner. Closed: your referral code and link stop working and earn nothing more, and the record no longer belongs to any account, so no one who signs up with your address later can claim it. Commissions you had already earned are still paid to you. Your name and email address stay on it for our tax and accounting records for 7 years after your account is deleted, and are then removed; the amounts stay.
  • Plans our staff granted you. Kept as our staff’s record of the grant, with your account id and email address removed.
  • Intimate-image reports you made. Kept as the legal record of your report and what we did about it: where the content is, what you told us, when it reached us, the network address and browser it came from where we recorded them, and any email address you gave, which our reply goes to. Your account id is removed from it.
  • Cipher votes. Kept in the count, with your account id removed.
  • Cipher readings you submitted. Kept as part of the public Cipher record, with your account id removed.
  • Reports you made of an answer or a shared chat, and reports of chats you shared. A report of sexual content involving a minor or of trafficking, and any report under a legal hold, is kept exactly as it was made until the time below. Any other report you made of an answer is deleted if our staff had already dismissed it or found it a duplicate when you delete your account. One still open then, or one they acted on, keeps your account id until the time below, even if they dismiss it later. Any other report you made of a shared chat loses your account id, email address, network (IP) address and browser at once; a scrambled form of your network address stays with it until the time below, used to count how many different people have open reports of that chat as sexual content involving a minor or depicting a real person, and to file a further report of that chat, for the same reason, from the same network, while the first is still open, without alerting our staff again. Any other report about a chat you shared stops naming your account if our staff had already dismissed it or found it a duplicate when you delete your account. One still open then, or one they acted on, keeps your account id until the time below, even if they dismiss it later. 90 days after our staff resolve a report (a year for sexual content involving a minor or trafficking), and never while a legal hold keeps it, the account ids, words, email address and network details it holds are deleted; what was reported is deleted then too, unless a later report of the same chat still relies on that copy.
  • Community reports you made. Kept, without your account id, until our staff resolve it, and then for as long as the message it is about. A report we passed to the authorities is kept exactly as you made it, your account id included, for as long as the message it is about.
  • Forum votes. Kept in the count, with your account id removed, for as long as the request is.
  • Community messages and direct messages you sent. Kept, under the handle you used and without your account id, for 12 months after each was sent. One under a report or flag our staff have not resolved is kept until they resolve it; one our automated check flagged as sexual content involving a minor or as trafficking is kept a year from that flag; one we reported to the authorities is kept with no set end. A message we reported to the authorities, or one our automated check flagged as sexual content involving a minor or as trafficking in the last year, keeps your account id until it is deleted.
  • Forum requests you posted. Kept, under the handle you used and without your account id, for as long as the forum keeps the request.
  • Direct-message conversations. An empty conversation is deleted. One with messages stays with the other member, showing you as unknown, until its messages are deleted on their schedule.
  • Private rooms you own. A room with other members stays open to them, with no owner and no new invitations; a room with no one else in it is closed.
  • Rooms you belong to. Deleted. A member you invited stays in the room, with nothing saying you invited them.
  • Handles you used, kept reserved. Every handle you used stays reserved, without your account id, so no one else can take it.
  • A legal hold, only if a chat you shared was reported, or something you posted or tried to post was flagged, as sexual content involving a minor or as trafficking. Only if, in the year before you delete your account, a chat you shared was reported to us as sexual content involving a minor or as trafficking, or our automated check flagged something you posted, or tried to post, in the community as either, and that report or flag was not dismissed: your email addresses and the network address you signed up from are kept for a year from that report or flag, for the authorities, and then deleted. If our staff dismiss every such report and flag after you delete your account, they are deleted then.
  • Where a background billing check last stopped, if that was at your account. Your account id is cleared from it; the check’s own counts, which never name you, are kept.
